Jarhead

So I just finished watching Jarhead.
It wasn't as good as the book.
Possibly because I managed to keep my imagination for the most part intact despite the education system's and TV's efforts.

I recommend that anyone who has not seen the Movie go read the book, then watch the movie if u want. For those of u who have already seen the film, try and block the film from your memory when your reading the book.

7 Days left in Nova Scotia. ^_^
It's getting exciting now

T - 8 Days

Ok so I'm was looking at the calendar on the computer and noticed that I only have 8 more days in Nova Scotia. I need a few more boxes.
Of course I am going to leave the shipping of everything to the last minute because I don't want to inconvenience Garth with having to be there to sign for my stuff. Also I still want to use the computers.

I'm from Section 9, Public Security.

Sweet Sweet Success

It Works.

For the Love of Server it actually works.

Now to resist reactivating my account until I'm out in Calgary.

WOW Ran

I got WOW start up using Wine. But it was a little choppy. Obviously I had to tinker with the graphics card drivers.

I killed them.

So I installed the Experimental new Drivers ... mmmm drivers in beta.

though I would post this update incase I total kill this machine.

First Error

The first major problem and annoyance to me has happened. The Installer has failed the install because it had problems reading Disk 3. Now if this is not the installer fault then I've very disappointed in the quality of the CD's Blizzard sells seeing as this is going to be only the second time that I install the game. Some poor bastard at Blizzard will be killed by my furry.

World Of Warcraft on Linux

Ok so I'm working my way through the WOW install on Linux.
It would be nice if the WOW installer was designed properly but wait no it was built with Windows in mind so it's crap.

I need to get a script to do some auto mounting and unmounting for removable media.

Garth if u are reading this, get on msn or something.
If u want me to get the case I need u to put me in contact with your cousin.

Guessing Game

For some reason the sound on my system is a constant guessing game as to which output plugin feels like driving the sound. Then u have to tweak it's settings too.

I can't figure out what is causing the problem yet.

Wine Install

For most who are reading this in Windows you are only doing so because you don't want to giveup your video games just to run a better OS.
There are 2 things that will contribute to Gamers switching to Linux:
  1. Game Developers widely supporting Linux
  2. The success of operations like The Wine Project
unfortunately for option 1, the game developers aren't going to do this until the Gamers have switched and Gamers aren't going to switch until they can play their games. It is indeed a vicious cycle. However this is where the second point comes in. What the Wine Project does is it translates the commands that games normally send to Windows into something that Linux can understand. This method has limited success however for several reasons.
For one games run in several different ways the first method and the largest obstacle is DirectX. Which I must commend Microsoft for, it has done a marvelous job of trapping game developers in the Windows environment. This is true because of the proprietary nature of DirectX and the fact the game developers have such ready access to it.
Now Wine has trouble with DirectX because it's proprietary, which means they don't let anyone see the Source code and it was developed in house with only their platform in mind. In order for Wine to help a Windows game communicate with Linux it must understand how it is trying to communicate. Basically the Gods and Army's of Code monkeys at WineHQ have to try and reverse engineer the entire DirectX system, All versions of this system. This is comparable to an ant trying to reverse engineer a Spaceship. There are a lot of unknowns. Games designed in the method usually don't run at all if they are for newer versions of DirectX like 9.0c, and is they do they are not very enjoyable. The older DirectX games work better (Yes that means Fallout 2 Plays Flawlessly).
Another method that is used to Games is Direct 3D, this is much more friendly to Wine and generally game running in this manner can be played on Wine without massive amounts of tinkering.
finally there is the Cream of the Crop. OpenGL, I mean just look at the name it's sexy to most of us because it says open. Meaning that the source code is available, that's like handing the ants the full Blueprints, tech specs and step by step instructions. These games run almost right away.
God it's sexy!

A way to Promote Linux

I have been thinking for several days now that I would like to do something that would really promote Linux use. I have decided that the one thing above all others that would help make Linux use Jump. Would be to create a top notch MMORPG. Not just any MMO a Cyberpunk based one, and to sweeten the pot just a little bit more make it 100% free by making it decentralized. Meaning that like the Exeem project for BitTorrent, it would remove the need of a main server and would be sustained by the very ppl playing the game. Now we know that decentralized WAN's can be created Exeem proved this. The main challenge here is dealing with updates to the software and saving the Char data. What ever solution that is determined for the Char Data it will clearly need to be encrypted to prevent bored script kiddies from altering their char.

I would like ppl's input on this.

OMG my Wikipedia post is still up.

Sandwich Time

Ok Slackware had it's fair share of Sandwich time but, my god.
The time it's taking for Gentoo to compile half of the shit I want is unreal.

On the upside it does mean I'll have a very clean system only building what I need usually as I need it.

Yes I did just submit Sandwich Time to Wikipedia.

:: Reviews : Switching to Windows: Not as easy as you think

This article is a interesting one that I saw on Mad Penguin. Most Linux users will no doubt find it humorous and hopefully windows users will open their eyes a little bit after reading it.

As an added bonus this is letting me test the "Blog This" button on my toolbar.

First Linux Post

This is my first post from inside my new OS.
It feels damn good.

Now if you'll excuse me I have system tweaking to do.

Chilly

I'm a little cold ATM, because I had to let the fire dieout about 4 hours ago.
Stuart has to clean out the stove. At least I don't have to do it.
I only live here on paper. That will eventually be changed, if I get around to it.

I found a Sweet Serial Experiments of Lain Background Link.

Mouse

I have the mouse working and I'm now running Enlightenment ^_^

Now to work on other things like sound.

I already have my Sweet ne Drivers for my Nvidia card installed.

No Dice

Under the watchful eye of one of the guru's in the forum I recompiled my Kernel with a few more options.

Still no bloody mouse.

This is why Linux has a bad Rep. Some times you have to do so much work just to get basic things.

Load All Your Modules

Right ....
So apparently my required "Modules" aren't getting auto loaded to support my USB mouse.
I thought that when I was compiling my Kernel that I built them in. Apparently not.
So I ask the Forum or help.
Their response is add the required modules to /etc/modules.autoload.d/kernel-2.6.

That's great, I guessed that but where are the modules. What ones do I need, when I was dealing with the Kernel it was a check box. USB Human Interface Devices.

I mean that's like tossing a off a dock. They aren't gonna learn how to swim, they don't even know they have to try and keep their head above water.

I Win

It now boots into Gentoo Linux.
Now to configure Enlightenment.

Yeah more fun

Back

I just got back home.
Mom stopped in to take me to lunch. Possibly out of sympathy cause I have been fighting with Gentoo for something like 18 hours.

The Good news, the second part of my Dual Boot system is working I can get into MS Crap Pro.
But that's not a real big deal cause I have the Laptop which has been doing great throughout this whole thing.

Getting There

I'm getting closer now.
It would have booted but I didn't put the correct Kernel in the boot sector.

I'm fixing that now though.

Soon Soon ...... Linux.

Out The Window

Ok so I have thrown the Graphical installer out the window along with the dead nic card.

Gonna give this another go.
Fuck this I'm going manual.

Piece of Junk

Ok so now the crappy installer doesn't do anything after u use it t configure your settings it just sits there saying it's working but there is no activity.

Gonna reload it and see if that Sparks any life into the thing.

I Think We May Have A Winner

Sweet Jesus.
I do believe that the experimental installer may actually be working after a little coaxing.
Not to mention motivational inspiration from Deck_Apocalypse.

It's still doing stuff (technical I know), so we'll see how ......
Damn it Now it says "Install failed!" something about a fatal error with the damn Kernel.

Time to bugger with it somemore.

Remember Don't try and install Linux without a second already setup computer and a shit load of free time.

Regroup

Right so Coffee and a defective Network card gave me an Idea.

Cheat.

Yes that's right I said cheat. But how do u cheat at installing an operating system.
Very simple (I Hope) you use another computer (one with a Burner not the Laptop that I'm using to chat with Gentoo ppl and Blog) to burn off the Gentoo Experimental LiveCD with a graphical installer. Then u hope it bloody well works.

Emo is very insistent. She would like to say "mmmrowww" to everyone.
She is helping me install Linux cause she is one smart Kitty. She helped me fix my network setup.

^_^

Gentoo 2 Sirdork 0

Ok I know that this time it was my fault I typed many things wrong to to being tired.
So I got Coffee.
Now with the magic of coffee and a new network card hopefuly I can get this bugger booted.

Oh Ya

I found "Instant Coffee" in the kitchen.
It may be a few years old but it's Coffee, something that is very much needed when trying to install Gentoo ALL NIGHT LONG.

Gentoo 1 Sirdork 0

Ok so my first try at installing Gentoo failed miserably with the words "Error loading operating sysem" comming up on the screen.

But I'm tring it again with everything default, in the hopes that I can get the Damn thing to boot.

I'll keep u posted about m battle with the worst install system I have ever seen.

Eureka

I have determined from careful observation of my cat. That cats shall cause the "Heat Death of the Universe". It will be caused by their amazing capacity to absorb heat from any source and not expend nearly as much energy as the collect.

Time for Wog Food

It's getting close to 4 am, I've been up for 8 hours. Time to cook Wog Food.
Now for those of u who don't have a sweet clue what Wog Food is I'll explain.

Wog Food is something that u cook to eat over the course of the day. It will provide u with 3 meals from one batch.

Ingredients:
1 Package of Yves Ground Round Original
1 Small Jar of Salsa
1 Cup of rice preferably natural

Cook the rice then remove from heat, now stir in the Yves and Salas.
You now have food at the perfect temperature and ready to eat.
You can add other spices and what not to your likeing.
Best of all u just made food for a day and it only cost u about $6

It Should Work

Ok so I have been reading in the Gentoo Forums, that it's relatively easy to get WOW to work in their distro.
unfortunately Eve-Online will not be so easy or even be playable, due to their heavy reliance on DirectX. So it looks like it's time for a Dual Boot.

That a New One

Right so I was trying to get a new Tower built for my mom.
But for some reason the system would lock when Windows XP automatically tried to detect the Hardware.
I try changing the CPU, the HDD, DVD, Ram, gaffes Card, and moving the networking card around. All no Dice.

Then for what ever reason I decide. I'll try to install Win .
Holly Shit it works.

What is so strange is that this system used to run just fine before with XP Pro.

I guess it just couldn't take having something so shitty on it.

For The Love of GOD Click

Ok I'll admit you many not have to click to get his love but, you know what I mean.
Anyway Please CLICK the google ads up top, and if your still running Internet Explorer I have a FireFox link for u to click. I make a few cents each time you click the top ads and a few more each time u use the FireFox link to download install and run the program.

That is all.

I'm Back and Better Than Ever !

That's right.
I'm back in business, On-Line in a big way. First I got this Blog, then I installed GAIM.
I've recovered from my "Digital Burnout", and ready to once again soak-up the Net.
Hell I'm even hooked into a few RSS feeds.

For those who are wondering I will Be back on WOW and EVE sometime in the Month of February.

Late Night Entertainment

I'm tired and borred outta my skull. So I have decided to share one of my favorite Flash Creations with u all.

Too Many Cases

Right.
As everyone should know by now, I'm moving on the 7th of Feb. As a result I'm trying to cut down on weight and size of the stuff I have to ship. I am amazed at how many bloody cases that have but apparently don't need.

I think I'm gonna need a Dumpster!!

The Best Game you Never Played

Ok so while I was sorting through my piles of stuff to decide what is getting shipped to Calgary and what is getting stored in my Mom's house (Bo ya Free Storage). I came across a very damaged CD labeled Enemy Nations.
I remembered the game very well. It's an off the beaten track game. I tried to read the CD but it was too far gone. So I decided to order it (Yes that's right a Game the I'm actually willing to pay for) from the Company Site and to my surprise they don't sell it anymore they give it away for FREE.
So here I present one of the Best games that you don't have to pay a Cent for.

First Post

Ok so any many of you know I sirdork the crazy am going to Calgary ... again.

I have had a few requests to keep ppl up to date with my progress if there is any or to just see that I haven't gotten myself killed.

So basically I'm gonna try and update this just about everyday. Hell with any luck this much typing my improve my spelling. By since I doubt that I have a spellchecker !
